MapleStory, a 2D side-scrolling massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), was first launched in 2003 by Wizet and published by Nexon. MapleStory has become a global phenomenon, amassing over $5.0 billion in lifetime revenue and boasting a staggering 250.0 million registered users worldwide. As a pioneer in the gaming industry, Nexon has spent two decades fine-tuning MapleStory as a long-term live service, consistently enhancing content and gameplay. However, like many legacy titles, MapleStory has faced challenges from its extended lifespan. Although continuous updates provided users content to enjoy, the release of new in-game items has also caused inflation in the economy. Nexon has recognized the need to evolve beyond traditional live service models to create a healthier, more sustainable engagement with players. With that in mind, Nexpace, a blockchain arm of Nexon, has launched MapleStory Universe, a blockchain-integrated gaming experience designed to preserve and enhance the original game’s IP. While still in its testnet phase, this initiative represents Nexon’s strategic solution: rather than reacting to emergent problems, MapleStory Universe seeks to fundamentally reshape the user experience by leveraging blockchain technology to support asset ownership, longevity, and secure transactions within a thriving ecosystem. MapleStory Universe ecosystem is built around four key pillars: MapleStory N, a blockchain-integrated MMORPG; Synergy Apps, user-generated content (UGC) DApps platform that connect with the in-game economy; MapleStory SDK, a developer toolkit for building applications and services within the ecosystem; and Nexpace Protocol and NXPC, delivering enhanced Rewards Experience to the community. These elements aim to create an interconnected experience that enhances player engagement and drives ecosystem growth.

Nexon's blockchain vision: Expanding the MapleStory legacy through MSUNexon, founded in 1994, has long been a prominent figure in the gaming industry, known for its diverse portfolio of successful online games. With MapleStory Universe, Nexon’s blockchain strategy represents more than just a technological shift—it embodies a core vision centered on enhancing the intrinsic value of game assets that have been fundamental to MapleStory’s enduring success and to building up the value of the MapleStory IP. The introduction of the Nexpace Protocol is designed to provide a robust value maintenance mechanism for these game assets while maximizing the fun and immersive elements that define the MapleStory experience.
At the heart of the Nexpace Protocol is the NXPC token, which functions as an index reflecting the overall value of the game asset economy. All value-generating activities within MSU, from gameplay achievements to in-game transactions, are encapsulated within NXPC, making it a critical pillar of the ecosystem’s economic model.
Key growth catalysts for MSU include expanding MapleStory N users and onboarding new user segments through the broader MSU ecosystem. Additionally, game updates, the development of Synergy Apps, and gameplay loops will contribute to the increasing utility and value of MSU game assets. This dynamic, in turn, creates flywheel effect, driving sustained value accumulation for NXPC.
The MapleStory Universe ecosystem
The MapleStory Universe encompasses interconnected applications and platforms designed to cultivate creativity, collaboration, and community engagement. The universe's components can be broken down as follows:
MapleStory NMapleStory N, the flagship title within the ecosystem, reimagines the classic MapleStory experience as a PC-based MMORPG infused with blockchain technology. This integration introduces features like digital ownership of in-game assets through NFTs, empowering players to trade and manage their virtual possessions. Players can earn in-game items, convert them into onchain NFTs, and trade them within the dedicated MapleStory Universe marketplace and external platforms, opening up new avenues for economic activity and player interaction.
Synergy AppsSynergy Apps are user-generated content (UGC) applications that empower players to become active creators, shaping the MapleStory Universe through their own unique contributions. These apps allow players to design and share custom worlds, quests, and interactive experiences, expanding the MapleStory ecosystem beyond traditional gameplay. Nexon’s goal for this initiative is to foster community-driven world-building, giving players greater creative control while strengthening engagement and long-term ecosystem growth.
Beyond UGC, Synergy Apps are decentralized applications (dApps) that enhance the MapleStory Universe experience. Key Synergy Apps as of right now include the Marketplace, a player-driven NFT trading hub, and the Explorer, which provides onchain transparency into game data. These applications create a dynamic and interconnected ecosystem, bridging Web3 functionality with traditional MMORPG gameplay.
MapleStory SDKThe MapleStory SDK is a developer toolkit that enables third-party developers to create and integrate their own applications and experiences within the MapleStory Universe. While the
SDK's full potential has not been fully revealed, but its goal is to allow others to interact with the ecosystem and connect their applications to the MapleStory Universe.
Reward Experience (RX) 2.0Reward Experience (RX) 2.0 is a mechanism used to create a dynamic reward system in MapleStory Universe. Unlike traditional MMORPGs where items flood the market and lose significance over time, enhanced RX enforces a fixed supply model through the Nexpace Protocol, meaning that every item minted, enhanced, or traded has a cap. The protocol also decentralizes the item issuance model, allowing players to issue items based on demand instead of centralized operators making endless loot drops. Since items have a set amount that can be created, this system not only preserves the rarity and utility of in-game items but also adds a new layer of strategy as players now need to manage their items based on real demand and supply constraints.
The interconnected nature of these components is key to the MapleStory Universe. MapleStory N provides the core MMORPG gameplay, Synergy Apps foster creativity and community-driven content, the MapleStory SDK opens doors for third-party innovation, and RX 2.0 aims to enhance the gameplay experience with a dynamic reward system. This synergistic approach positions MapleStory Universe as a platform to onboard users to an IP they recognize while providing a novel take on the classic game they love.
Tokenomics and economic design: The NESO and NXPC dynamicMapleStory Universe's protocol consists of two tokens, NESO and NXPC, which serve distinct yet complementary roles within the ecosystem and are linked at a fixed rate. This structure caters to players and creators, fostering a balanced and thriving economy.
NESO functions as the primary in-game currency within MapleStory N. Currently available on testnet, players earn NESO by completing quests, engaging in various in-game activities, and contributing to the ecosystem. Initially, NESO operates offchain, facilitating transactions and item enhancements within the game. However, players can mint their offchain NESO into onchain NESO, which can then be used to create onchain NFTs of in-game characters or items. These NFTs can be traded within the MapleStory Universe marketplace or on external NFT trading platforms.
NXPC, with a 1.0 billion token supply, serves as the economic backbone of the MapleStory Universe. It will drive a sustainable value-generation cycle through controlled item supply, market-driven pricing, and liquidity mechanisms. Unlike traditional game tokens that function primarily as rewards, Nexon looks to provide an entirely new system with NXPC. NXPC is instead designed as a comprehensive economic framework that aligns incentives across the ecosystem.
By capping item issuance, implementing dynamic pricing models, and embedding value accrual within transaction flows, NXPC aims to mitigate inflationary risks and item oversupply while ensuring long-term economic stability. To achieve its goals, NXPC utilizes “Fission” and “Fusion” two unique mechanisms.
FissionAnyone holding the NXPC token can complete the Fission process. Players can use their NXPC tokens to obtain a basket of predetermined in-game items during this process. The Fission mechanism is the only way to issue new items in MapleStory N.
FusionFusion works opposite to Fission, where users can create a basket of various NFT items to fuse and, in return, receive NXPC.
The mechanisms of Fission and Fusion contribute to NXPC's overall goal of creating an economic framework with direct player participation, moving away from the traditional gaming model, in which gaming tokens function primarily as rewards.
Beyond in-game asset management, NXPC also powers a broader platform economy—enabling third-party developers to integrate applications, facilitating a dynamic digital asset marketplace, and providing content creators with new monetization opportunities.
MapleStory playtestsA series of testing phases have marked MapleStory Universe's development. These phases have continually improved the MapleStory N gameplay elements as they prepare for mainnet launch.
First Pioneer TestThe First Pioneer Test, conducted from July 24 to Aug. 2, 2024, was MapleStory's first test. With over 1,000 participants, this closed test yielded impressive performance metrics, including a 92% average daily active user (DAU) rate, an 82% retention rate, and total playtime exceeding 45,000 hours. This initial phase allowed the MapleStory Universe team to gather crucial feedback to prepare for subsequent testing phases.
Second Pioneer TestThe Second Pioneer Test, held from November 20 to 29, 2024, marked a significant expansion in community involvement. As the first open beta, this test welcomed a broader audience to explore MapleStory N. Participants had the opportunity to interact with MapleStory N, experience the newly implemented marketplace, and explore the functionalities of the explorer tool. A unique feature of this test was the “Make Special Name” promotion, which allowed players to reserve their desired in-game names by collecting letters on OpenSea, offering a personalized and engaging experience. The collected names will then be claimable as rewards after the mainnet launch to further incentivize player participation and create a sense of anticipation for the official release. The Second Pioneer Test also included a substantial reward pool of 5.0 million NXPC, "Step into the MapleStory Universe, "distributed among participants for completing various tasks and contributing to the testing process.
Gear Up NOW! EventThe Gear Up NOW! event, ran from November 29th to Dec. 23rd, 2024. The Playtest followed the Second Pioneer Test, maintaining momentum and allowing players to continue playing MapleStory N. This event introduced several new features and incentives, including the LIVE World Leap. This feature allowed participants who fulfilled specific criteria to transfer their characters and certain items to be available at the official server launch. However, certain items, such as superior equipment and enhancements, are excluded from the transfer, ensuring a balanced playing field at launch. The event also offered special decorative item sets and pet exchange coupons.
The Gear Up NOW! event showcased sustained user engagement, with daily transactions exceeding 150,000 throughout the event. Transaction activity peaked on Dec. 15, 2024, with daily transactions hitting a high of 846,414, highlighting strong player interest and continued participation in the ecosystem. The event’s success underscores MapleStory Universe’s ability to maintain momentum following the Second Pioneer Test and further demonstrates user interest.
Live World LeapThe Live World Leap event launched on Feb. 12, 2025, and runs until Mar. 12, 2025. This new event marked a change in MapleStory Universe’s approach to player retention. Unlike traditional MMORPGs that reset player progress when transitioning from testnet to a full live game, MapleStory Universe took an experimental approach, allowing players to carry over their accumulated assets and progression into the live version upon fulfilling specific in-game tasks.
During the Gear UP NOW! phase, Nexon announced the details of the Live World Leap. Letting players know they can carry their assets into the live game. This announcement was designed to test whether retaining earned items would impact enhanced player engagement, lasting value, and reward progression. Ultimately, in-game behavior shifted significantly once players learned their playtest assets would persist. NESO spending rates surged over 7 times, with 81% of all NESO used for item enhancements, highlighting increased investment in long-term progression. Despite these assets holding no inherent monetary value at the time, a secondary trading market organically emerged on the MapleStory Universe Discord, where users exchanged real assets for NESO and in-game items.
The success of Live World Leap activation validated MapleStory Universe’s thesis: when players collectively recognize and agree upon the value of in-game assets—regardless of monetary worth—an RX-driven ecosystem begins to emerge naturally. MapleStory’s ecosystem during this time was sustained by community consensus, internal engagement rules, and the pursuit of progression, demonstrating the potential for blockchain-based incentives to reshape MMORPG economies. What MapleStory Universe accomplished during this time allowed them to demonstrate that item permanence and player-driven economies can foster deeper engagement and long-term ecosystem growth.
Closing SummaryMapleStory Universe represents a significant step in Nexon's journey to integrate its iconic MapleStory IP into a new gaming landscape. The project's multifaceted approach, encompassing core gameplay through MapleStory N, user-generated content through Synergy Apps, third-party development potential through the MapleStory SDK, and a dynamic reward system powered by Nexpace Protocol, puts it in a strong position in the evolving world of blockchain gaming.
